Thesis Project, Book Entitled: Architecture in the Digital Age, New York City
Prof. Thomas Mellins, Mentor
The concept for my thesis is to create an academic dissertation with illustrations sufficient to create a fluent narrative.
I envision the thesis as a digital 21st century textbook, an illustrated narration in compartmental form. Like ASCII, the binary language of computers, the thesis incorporates the binary format of ‘illustrated language’ facilitating learning and comprehension.
My thesis addresses the issue of whether architecture, at once construed as “identification of place” may also be considered as identification of time, circumstance, and society itself. The premise is to analyze the built environment in New York City beginning with Modernism in the 20th century; and, through individual case studies determine to what extent certain iconic 21st century buildings reflect or express the Zeitgeist, or spirit of the times.
