Benny Seda-Galarza ’22 (MFA1)
Two Scholarships Relieved Economic Strain so This Designer Could Excel
Benny Seda-Galarza grew up in San Juan, Puerto Rico and attended the University of Puerto Rico as an undergrad. After college, he worked for the Library of Congress in Public Affairs for six years. It was enviable work, but it was not his dream. After much introspection, he decided to take “the risk” and go for an MFA at NYSID.
Here at NYSID, he distinguished himself as both an interior designer and a member of the community. He served as volunteer Director of Marketing for the Graduate Student Association, and as a member of NYSID’s Presidential Commission on Diversity, Equity & Inclusion. He says, “As a member of an unrepresented group, I understand the power of representation and visibility. Taking that role on the GSA meant that I could be a model and mentor for other students.”
Seda-Galarza, now working in the field, was the recipient of both the Mark Hampton Scholarship and the Jean Lindsey Scholarship while at NYSID. “The scholarships are validation that my work is being recognized,” he said. “They alleviated the burden of having a full-time job while I am in school so I can focus on the details of my renderings and not stress about making rent or buying groceries. I have produced better work because of the scholarships.” Seda-Galarza added, “Interior design fills me with passion. It lets me be creative in a way that’s sustainable as an adult.”
