The principles and best practices of sustainable design are more than just buzz-words: they’re marketable skills that are essential to the design industry today.
The MPS in Sustainable Interior Environments (MPSS) is a post-professional program designed to prepare design professionals for leadership roles in the development and maintenance of sustainable interior spaces that positively impact the world. All classes are offered in the evenings and on weekends, available full-time in-person or online, with live sessions conducted via video conferencing.

"Sustainable Design is at an evolutionary point in its development, a point at which it has gone from a siloed and appended afterthought aspect of design to an almost fully integrated part of it. And with that evolution has come an evolution in the way it is taught. Where it once was an isolated, perhaps elective, course or two, it, too, has become integrated, though more so in some programs than others. That raises some intriguing questions for a program such as ours that is specifically about sustainable design."
Intended for those working in the design or architecture professions, the program provides students with a thorough grounding in the best practices in environmentally informed designs for the interior. Students become knowledgeable on topics tested by the LEED and WELL exams. Upon completion of the MPSS program and with further study and experience, students are in a position to sit for LEED AP and WELL AP Accreditation — two highly sought-after credentials.
Students are exposed to a wide range of topics, research methods, integrated design development methodologies, and sustainable project management practices. Course work addresses the history and theory of sustainability, principles of sustainable materials, natural and artificial lighting and control systems, and integrated environmental systems design. It also covers indoor air quality as well as green textiles, furnishings, and decorative elements. The program includes two studio courses designed to integrate acquired knowledge and research while exploring both residential and nonresidential environments.
The program requires full-time study and can be completed in one year

Requires a degree in interior design, architecture, engineering, or a closely related field and an advanced portfolio

STEM OPT Extension
International students with degrees in majors that appear on the US government's official list of STEM fields may be eligible for the 24-month OPT extension beyond the initial year of OPT. NYSID's MPS programs are designated with a STEM CIP code, which is found under the "Program of Study" field on page 1 of the I-20.OPT applications and extensions require U.S. DOH/USCIS approval. NOTE: Extension is not guaranteed.
